A male ant has straight antennae is through stereotypes, games, touch and relationships. Playing out polarities of masculinity in an arena-like preset, this piece challenges singular perspectives on the male body and its moorings.
Having begun by observing men on the streets, the piece now finds itself addressing the ideas of masculinity reside in the real moment of contact between people. The chorographer sees an urgent need to view masculinity through multiple lenses, in the specific context of the subcontinent, given the various kinds of gendered violence that are increasingly being reported.
About the Choreographer: Based out of New Delhi, Mandeep Raikhy is a dance practitioner with a particular interest in exploring the relationship between contemporary dance and Indian classical forms of dance like Bharatnatyam. He is interested in investigating the dance vocabulary that results from the integration of these forms with contemporary dance techniques.
Mandeep began studying jazz at age 19 at the Danceworx, New Delhi, and his subsequent interest in contemporary dance took him to London where he completed a BA (Hons) in Dance Theatre at Laban.
He undertook his first tour with Shobana Jeyasingh Dance Company, London and toured with their annual productions between 2005-09. Raikhy was also part of the company’s education team and has extensive teaching experience. Since 2010, Mandeep has created 2 full-length works, Inhabited Geometry (2010) and a male ant has straight antennae (2013). Through his work as the Managing Director at Gati Dance Forum, Raikhy currently works towards creating a sustainable environment for contemporary dance practice in India.
