Event Description : Third Bell presents "What's in a Surname" Hindi Comedy Play.
What's in a Surname originally 'Ravi Aur Ravi' has been awarded by Dilli Sahitya Kala Parishad- the apex body of the capital. It is rare that comedies are chosen for an award, but the script was also considered relevant, thought-provoking and dramatically engaging. The playwright Ashok Lal then adapted the play for a hilarious comedy film, 'Tera Naam Mera Naam', directed by Ramesh Talwar.
The play uses the age-old Shakespearean device of comedy of errors to create a hilarious plot. (Also the play derives its title from Shakespeare- 'Whats in a name'.) 'A rose by any other name would smell as sweet' is a frequently referenced part of his play 'Romeo and Juliet', in which Juliet seems to argue that it does not matter that Romeo is from her rival's house of Montague, that is, that he is named 'Montague.'
Given the complex nature and prejudices of the Indian society-which has far more 'surnames' than names!, the play acquires many more shades. The play gives us an occasion to laugh at our own unknown and unwitting prejudices! How the protagonists of the play cope with societal prejudices is at the core of the hilarious play.
