Event Description : "The Balm of Art" a ten-day long group show.

The theme of the show focuses on the comparative role of women in the ancient society and in the modern times as healers.

"It is not just in India, but around the world, that while the women worked as independent and honored healers, in the twenty-first century, the current role of women as mothers, nurses and healthcare professionals, coincides with the re-emergence of feminine values," says Pratibha Agarwal, promoter of the gallery, who has also curated the show.  "Women have always possessed a strong tradition as healers, from ancient Danish shamans to doctors and nurses. Throughout the years, however, women have been systematically marginalised as socially legitimate practitioners by their male counterparts," she adds.

Though it sounds contrary but the truth remains that women who have served and healed with honor and clarity, do possess a spirit of a “warrior” woman.  The healing is not just about physical but also the mental and social aspect, which needs to be dealt with.   ""While women’s rights and careers have come a long way, there are still some segments of Indian society where women in general are discriminated. Even as India is trying to address gender inequality through health, education and livelihood programmes, there is a vast gap that needs to be filled up," says Shekhar Mukherjee, a Kolkata-based senior artist.

Women are generally scrutinized more in rural areas where 73 percent of the poor live. Social discrimination not only has its roots in rural areas, but also in the Indian system of castes. "Although the caste system is now officially illegal, in some places, it is still alive. The question is who would heal the women who are socially and mentally scarred? It is the other, better-placed women who have to bring them into the mainstream," says Sher Singh Kukkal, one of the senior artists, based in Noida and whose painting of a single woman embodies his thoughts on canvas.

Even in this modern era, females often have to be married off with a substantial dowry. "Sons are considered breadwinners who will look after their parents and continue the family name, whereas daughters are often considered a financial burden. These practices are pulling back the progress of the women," says Bhaskar Singha, another celebrated artist, who also teaches art at a local school.

The boy-to-girl ratio in India did not widen precipitously until the advent of the ultrasound in the 1970s, which allowed women to determine the sex of their child by the fourth month of pregnancy. This is a traditional practice exacerbated by modern technology.

"While we worship women as mother goddess, India’s maternal mortality ratio is quite high as compared to other countries. Even today and in this age, many Indian women die from pregnancy, childbirth and unsafe abortions. Wounded and broken, they need to be healed and of course, the safety of the girl child remains a burning issue," says Pooja Pandey, a young, upcoming artist.
