Event Description : Sangeet Natak Akademi presents "Andha Yug, play in Hindi" video screening as part of Sanchayan - Screening of archival films & video recordings.

Directed by Satyadev Dubey
Nehru Shatabdi Natya Samaroh, 1989

Andha Yug is based on the Mahabharata. Beginning with the final and crucial fight between Bhima and Duryodhana on the last day of the 18–day war between the Kauravas and the Pandavas, the play shows the agony of the blind Kaurava king Dhritarashtra and his wife Gandhari, the dilemma of Lord Krishna the preceptor, and the bestiality of Ashwatthama who had sworn vengeance on the Pandavas for their foul play.

Ashwatthama kills the sleeping Pandavas and throws Brahma's weapon on Uttara, who is carrying Abhimanyu's child. Gandhari, seeing the remains of her son Duryodhana's body, curses Lord Krishna, exclaiming that his clan would be eliminated and he himself would die at the hands of an ordinary hunter. Yudhishthira, on the other hand, is haunted by the horrors of war and disillusioned with victory. The changing ideals of the rulers leave the common man unaffected. The play ends with the death of Lord Krishna and a new realization dawning on Ashwatthama.

Background : Over the past six decades, Sangeet Natak Akademi has built up an archive of audio and video tapes, photographs, slides and films on the performing arts.
