Kitchen Katha is the story of Chand Kaur who was very sensitive to onions. Condemned to look after her tyrannical aunt, Chand Kaur found her destiny in the kitchen. When her aunt forces her true love, Mangal, to marry her own daughter, Chand Kaur learns to sustain and nurture her love with her cooking. This is a culinary romance where food and images of food, are used as metaphors for life and love.
The play is set in a kitchen. Tara, the grand-daughter of Chand Kaur, unravels the story of her mother. Told in a story-telling format, the play unfolds through the garden of memory, thoughts and feelings of sensuality, pain, happiness and rejection. To connect eroticism with food, this play creates a mapless journey through the realms of sensual memories; in which the boundaries between love and appetite become diffused. A series of recipes link with the narrative, to create a love story. Seduction through food, and stories about sex and eating, titillating recipes of aphrodisiacs take you through Chand Kaur’s sensual odyssey.
This play has been written by Surjit Patar, while the resource material for the play is based on Laura Esquivel’s Like Water for Chocolate, and Isabel Allende’s Aphrodite.
Directed by Neelam Mansingh Chaudhury
