The play Aur Kitne Tukde, written by B. Gauri, is based primarily on Urvashi Butalia’s book The Other Side of Silence, which chronicles the partition of Punjab through personal histories of some of the survivors through a series of interviews, exploring collective and individual memories, their transformation with time, and examines how and why these memories are The play revolves around the stories of four women who are unconnected but their experiences during and after partition are related.
While all of them were victims of the patriarchal concept of honour in some form or the other, their specific circumstances create different tragedies.
Sadia, abducted and brought into a Hindu family keeps waiting for her brother to come and take her back; Vimla is raped and disfigured on her journey back home, and when rejected by her family makes an independent life as a social worker; Zahida’s story is based on the well-known Zainab-Buta Singh tragedy; and Harnam is a survivor of a mass suicide, suffers from isolation and guilt for not succeeding in becoming a martyr for the honour of her community.
Three out of these four stories are based on real-life characters, where only the names have been changed to protect their privacy, while Sadia’s story is based on Jamila Hashmi’s story, The Exile.
Directed by Kirti Jain
