Event Description : Abhang theatre presents "The Comedy of Terror" (an adaptation of Dario Fo’s Trumpet and Raspberries)

The Comedy of Terror is a farce with the traditional ingredients of mistaken identity and its hilarious consequences, but it also has a strong political message. It was first performed in 1981, under its original Italian title - Clacson, Trombette e Pernacchi (Claxons, Trumpets and Raspberries).

The fictional plot of this satire revolves around a real political figure, Birla, head of the Car Factory. When wealthy Birla is disfigured in a failed kidnap attempt, he is rescued by humble Mahendranath, one of his urvashi car factory employees. Mahendranath flees the scene when people start shooting at him, leaving his jacket on Birla’s body. The rich and influential Birla is taken to hospital in Mahendranath's jacket, where he mistakenly has his face reconstructed in the poor Mahendranath likeness. Chaotic confusion ensues as Mahendranath finds himself chief suspect in a kidnap plot against himself.

This ensemble is the brain child of pigments of painters, system of engineers, movement of dancers, chords of musicians, truth of an actor and the reasoning of a dramaturge.

Abhang decodes all the layers of complexities created by pre-existing philosophies in our socio-political milieu. We try creating performances that motivates the being, confuses the mind, confronts the soul, questions the existence and entertain our faculties.
