"‘Yuj’ - to unite is the root word for yoga. Performing arts is understood in the context of Yoga as Naad yoga, Asanas, Mudras, Pranayam, Bandhas, Kriyas and Dhyana (Meditation). In both disciplines the practice combines physical exercise, has meditative and spiritual pursuits that connect humanity. The Sangeet Natak Akademi is the national academy of music, dance and drama under the Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India which is organizing ‘Yog Parva’, a festival to celebrate the International Day of Yoga from 21st to 27th June 2015 at Rabindra Bhavan premises, New Delhi by presenting performing and visual arts, wellness haat, organic cafe and many other activities to spread the value of Yoga." - says Helen Acharya (SECRETARY - SANGEET NATAK AKADEMY)
The exhibition ‘Yoga Chakra’ – Tradition & Modernity, will highlight an all encompassing philosophy of life sustaining practices across ages, cultures and continents for meditation and stress relief. It will showcase an all inclusive multicultural multimedia encounter through a convergence of illustrated manuscripts, paintings, photographs, books, interactive installations, digital work, and films. The other aspects of the festival that is integral to the concept of yoga include dance performances, music concerts, theater, lecture demonstrations, discourses, talks, workshops, meditation sessions, consultations with Yoga experts as well as an interactive arena to experience a host of herbal remedies and organic cuisine from across the country. The idea is to highlight various aspects of Yoga on a common platform where people will be able to connect with their inner selves and experience a feeling of well being.
The Akademy has partnered with various prestigious Institutions including the National Museum New Delhi, Indira Gandhi National Centre for Art New Delhi, Lalit Kala Akademy New Delhi, Indian Museum Kolkata, Allahabad Museum to highlight the importance of this great traditional Indian practice that is more than 5000 years old. In addition to this there is a collaborative effort with Yoga schools and centres like Isha Foundation, Patanjali, Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga to conduct workshops and yoga sessions along with showcasing different kinds of ayurvedic, herbal and organic products to the visitors.
"The act of creating art itself is a yogic practice for the artists and the rasikas reflected in the vast corpus of visual arts. Encompassing traditions and modernity, some featuring idealized yogic bodies prepared, purified and adorned; and others in abstract meditative forms elucidate unity of the self with the absolute for harmony and peace. The 300 multi-media expressions in Yoga Chakra exhibition and project rotate around concepts of gyana, karma and bhakti Yoga. They include antiquities selected and sourced from museums around the country as well as fresh commissions created by some of the contemporary artists. The project focuses on the philosophy and dynamics of Yoga, as a way of life, for an interface between mind, body and soul that continue to engage artists across cultures and eras" says Sushma.K. Bahl (curator cultural projects)
