Born in 1950 in Nowgong (Nagaon), Assam, Shrimati Parveen Sultana received her initial training in music under her father Janab Ikramul Majid and Pandit Chinmoy Lahiri. Later she became a disciple of Janab Mohammad Dilshad Khan, and assimilated in her Gayaki the essence of both Patiala and Kirana gharanas.
Shrimati Parveen Sultana Khan made a mark as a performer early in life and gained wide popularity in major music events. An outstanding vocalist, she is known for the range and power of her voice and her handling of Sapat Taans, Gamaks, Taan Palat and Jamjama. She has participated in a large number of concerts around the world and has produced many gramophone records, cassettes, She has received several honours for her music, including the title Sangeet Samragni from the Government of Assam and the Padma Shri (1972).
Shrimati Parveen Sultana Khan received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for her contribution to Hindustani vocal music in 1998.

Background : Over the past six decades, Sangeet Natak Akademi has built up an archive of audio and video tapes, photographs, slides and films on the performing arts.
