Event Description : 'All About Applique' Designs, Stitches, How To's and more - Sunday Workshop.
The term Applique’ means "applied" or "thing that has been applied."
It is an art in which a smaller piece of fabric is applied on a larger piece of fabric and attached by stitching. The technique is very commonly used in various types of textiles and is also known as patchwork sometimes.
Applique’ is a form of surface ornamentation that is used to decorate a garment or product.
Patterns or motifs are created by cutting designs out of a fabric and then using needlework, these patterns are sewn to a larger piece of contrasting colour or texture. The edges of the cut out piece on top are sealed and decorated using various stitches.
It is also used extensively in quilting in which a foam is placed in between the two layers to give an embossed effect.
In this workshop we will learn the following:
- Drawing and tracing of designs
- Techniques to trace the designs on the fabric and draw patterns
- Cutting and applying the small pieces on a bigger fabric
- Reverse appliqué: Here the two layers of fabric are first sewn together, then
designs are cut away from the top layer.
- Quilting technique
- Various stitches which are used to attach the pieces and to decorate the surface.
The below mentioned stitches will be demonstrated :
- Straight stitch, typically 20-30mm in from the edge.
- Satin stitch, all around, overlapping the edge.
- Blanket stitch - used to finish an unhemmed edge
- Blind stitch (or hemstitch) - a type of slip stitch used for inconspicuous hems
- Buttonhole stitch - for reinforcing buttonholes and preventing cut fabric from raveling
- Chain stitch - hand stitch making chains for decoration
- Cross-stitch – decoration with cross patterns
- Running stitch - a hand stitch for seams and gathering
