Malavika Sarukkai has emerged as an outstanding exponent of Bharatanatyam on the Indian dance scene. She received training in Bharatanatyam from Gurus K. Kalyanasundaram Pillai, S.K.Rajaratnam and Kalanidhi Narayanan, and was also trained in Oddisi dance under Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra and Ramani Ranjan Jena.
Since the early 1980s, she has participated in major arts events in India and abroad including the Festivals of India in U.K., U.S.A., France and Japan. Hailed by the critics and audiences worldwide, her progress to stardom has been meteoric. She has also extended the traditional repertoire with her own compositions in nritta and abhinaya. Apart from traditional compositions, she has been acclaimed for her presentations like Krishna Ritu Krida and Fireflies.
Malavika Sarukkai is a recipient of the Kalaimamani title from the Tamil Nadu Eyal Isai Nataka Manram.
