Event Description : “Homage to Mother Earth” group art show.
The recent earthquakes around the world have created a furore. More and more people are becoming aware of the importance of saving the earth and the sense of urgency to save the environment is growing stronger than ever before.
“After all, we only have one planet; if this one becomes totally ruined, our future generations will have to bear the brunt. If we all do our part to save mother earth, it is definitely possible. Therefore, people should learn as much as they can about ways that they can help save the environment; by working together, our planet can remain habitable for centuries to come,” says artist SS Kukkal, a very senior and vastly respected artist from Noida, commenting on his work in which he has depicted mother earth as woman who loves its flora and fawna. Kukkal has used leaves plucked from plants, treated them and then used them in his paintings.
Another participating artist, Geeta Mohan says, “The popularity of recycling has increased a great deal in recent years, as people search for ways of saving mother earth. Many different things can be recycled and reused, in making artistic works. It makes sense, in using Mother Earth’s discards to beautify our environment,” as she explains her work in which Lord Buddha hair bun is made out of dried up and colours flowers. Here, Buddha is sitting over a lotus flower which shows the connection of the Earth with the spiritual.
According to Sekhar Mukherjee, whose paintings are women-oriented, Mother Earth is like a woman, who is ready to give all to its children, who may or may not give the desired returns. “Just as the woman is the creator, so is the Mother Earth, which is ready to shower its love on mankind in the form of air, water and food,” says Mukherjee.
“Teaching our children about the importance of saving mother earth is a great way of instilling lifelong habits that can help save the environment. Young children should be encouraged to develop habits that promote eco-friendly living or we can have so many disasters like the Kedarnath,” laments Premila Singh, who has painted the holy shrine in the aftermath of the fury of the flood.
“In addition to recycling and reusing a lot of the materials that we rely on, people can help save the environment by reducing their use of them overall. This pertains not only to paper and plastic, but also to things like water and energy,” says Hemant Kumar Kalita who has painted a human form holding a tree and the soul of the earth emerging from the tree is reaching out to the universe.
“There are many small, easy ways to contribute to saving mother earth. You can try only running the tap when absolutely necessary; this saves water and can, in turn, help save the environment. Never litter; saving earth begins with cleaning up after yourself,” says Pratibha Agarwal, co-promoter of the gallery. “Where possible, ride a bicycle to get around, less cars on the road can significantly help save Earth. Turn off unused lights in your home to further enhance your fight to save mother earth, and encourage others that you know to follow suit and spread awareness,” adds Agarwal.
