Event Description : On the occasion of World Dance Day, we in collaboration with Sangeet Natak Akademi and with support from IOC are presenting  “Ram – Mat” (a Seminar cum Dance presentation).

“Ram-Mat”: Perceptions
Perception is sensory experience of the world involving both the recognition of environmental stimuli and actions in response to these stimuli. It varies from individual to individual. New insight can replace old assumptions as new understanding sprouts and new curiosity takes over.
“Ram-Mat” seeks to explore range of perceptions on two issues namely (i) Ram and Ramatva that have now come to denote various qualities, some far removed from the virtuous embodiment which Rama had come to denote in earlier times and (ii) The Veil, part of all cultures, where the concept of veiling is inseparable from its multiple related and unrelated expressions reconstructing symbols with great force. Ismat Chugtai, whose literary outpourings were evocations of lives behind the curtain and for tearing that curtain away, said: “My creativity, my captivity, is my own desire, my own longing, and I have control over it.”

Schedule :

27th April :

The high powered panellist include Acharya Shri Shrivatsa Goswami (Director, Sri Caitanya Prema Samsthan), Ashok Vajpayi (poet, essayist, critic) and Mehru Jaffer (author, journalist) on the subject of “Ramatva”. Maryada Purushottam, the essence of good, the king who governs a Ram Rajya, who fights all kinds of demons –within and without- to attain his wife and then forsakes her…… Ram and Ramatva have now come to denote various qualities –some far removed from the virtuous embodiment which Rama had come to denote in earlier times.
We seek to maybe demystify Rama or possibly, add to the complexity of this figure who behaved in manners contradictory.

The dance performance “Kab Aogey Rama” which features new perception on 3 aspects from the Ramayana and which was first premiered in 1984

28th April :
Shri Pavan K. Varma,( MP, author, retd IFS), Dr Syeda Hameed (writer, activist and ex-Member PC), Dr.Rakhshanda Jalil (literary historian, writer-critic), Dr. Arshiya Sethi  (scholar-artiste, cultural visionary) and Ravindra Misra (art critic) will be the speakers on the subject of “The Veil”.
Veil is part of all cultures. The concept of veiling is inseparable from its multiple and apparently unrelated expressions reconstructing symbols with great force. Does it suggest duality between signifier and signified or is it a symbol of repression, modesty or identity or invoking of ‘sharam’ or something more? Is it symbolic of maintenance of social distance and the communication of social status or does it give out mysterious hints relating to sexuality? Is it a symbol of concealment or of faith?

A short emotional and evocative delineation of “The Veil”(a short story by Ismat Chugtai). These will be performed by my ASAVARI Repertory and myself.
