Event Description : Repertory Company of Shri Ram Centre for Performing Arts presents Moliere's "Tartuffe" Hindi Play.
Shri Ram Centre presents Moliere's Tartuffe, directed by SRC's creative director, K. Madavane.Tartuffeis a comedy, originally written in five acts, a tale of an incorrigible imposter, set in 17th century France. Moliere, who is considered to be the father of French comedy, writes in his characteristic style using sarcasm, wit and humour to build and expose the character of Tartuffe - which has come to mean a hypocrite, especially a hypocrite displaying a fake religious piety and affected morality.
Madavane's interpretation is based on « speed and movement ». It is «... supercharged running, chasing, gesticulation, clambering, crawling, sprawling.... » (Sunit Tandon). A subject matter like Tartuffe has the risk of falling into a trap of over emphasising the text to bring out the satire. Madavane combines quick wit conversations with high voltage action on stage, which keeps audience engaged from the word go. The actors use wheeled props extensively and effectively to bring the stage alive. One of Madavane's best!
Bringing to Delhi one of the finest productions we saw last in 1987.
