Sanskrit, the classical language of India is a shared heritage of Asia. Scholars and pilgrims carried abroad texts on sacred and secular sciences written in it during the early years of Christian era along the maritime trade routes. They played a key role in advancement of cultural and intellectual lives of the people attaining the highest levels of beauty and nobility. A high erudition in Sanskrit marked their cultures for many centuries. It was a language for international communication. Java in Indonesia was a famous international centre for studying it. New systems of administration, moral and social values embedded with profound philosophy were introduced. Names of islands, rivers, cities, hills, roads, institutions, people and places in SEA reveal the impact of Sanskrit on the cultures of SEA. An alphabetical culture was a gift of Sanskrit to SEA.
