Ajanta ki Taraf is a production weaved from three stories of the noted Urdu writer, Khwaja Ahmad Abbas - Ajanta, Zafraan ke Phool and Sardarji (later renamed Meri maut). The play that portrays the aftermath of one of the most horrifying tragedy to wound independent India – the Partition. The three stories strung together present a tale of woes evoking the imageries of tragedies long forgotten and rarely retold but still shading shadows on our lives, even in this post-liberal era. In times when humanity is held hostage by terror and the world is being re-carved along sectarian lines, when states increasingly become fascists in nature and words like war on terror, pre-emptive strikes and rendition echo in our daily lives, when courts run trials to appease the masses rather than serve justice, Khawaja Ahmad Abbas’ writings lightens the path to shape our world with a new vigour. The protagonists are analogous to the characters in present times in more ways than one and the stories unravel the very fabric of modern India as it evolves into a super-power.
