Event Description : Sangeet Natak Akademi presents Screening of Rachna (Contemporary Indian Music) Bhaskar Chandavarkar Srjan – Festival of Contemporary lndian Music New Delhi, 1999.

Bhaskar Chandavarkar learnt Sitar from Pandit Ravi Shankar and Umashankar Misra; he also trained in Hindustani vocal music. Later Chandavarkar studied jazz with Pat Smythe.

Bhaskar Chandavarkar served the Film and Television lnstitute of India, Pune (1965-80), working as a resident composer and teacher of applied music. During this period he also taught short courses at other institutions, at home and abroad, besides composing music for a number of films and plays: Vamsha Vriksha, Chashiram Kotwal, Shakuntala, etc. An independent composer from 1980, Chandavarkar has to date composed music for more than 35 films in several Indian languages.

Background : Over the past six decades, Sangeet Natak Akademi has built up an archive of audio and video tapes, photographs, slides and films on the performing arts.
