Event Description : Sangeet Natak Akademi presents Screening of "Quaid-e-Hayat" Urdu Play.

The play Quaid-e-Hayat written by Surendra Verma captures the troubled life and time of Mirza Ghalib, the renowned Urdu poet, including his bitter domestic life, his financial difficulties and above all, his troubled and tragic relationship with Ouatiba, a calligraphist.

Aapa, the elder sister of Umrao, Ghalib's wife visits her. During a conversation with Umrao, Aapa realizes her loneliness, yearning for children, and her deep religiousness. They are interrupted again and again by the servant Kallu who informs about people who have come to collect money. Ghalib is away at Calcutta. Seeing the situation, Aapa asks Umrao to stay with her while Ghalib is away and Aapa agrees to give her son Zainul to Umrao. Umrao becomes joyous. On Ghalib's arrival Umrao asks him to thank Aapa, but he thanks her rather sarcastically. Umrao leaves in anger while Aapa and Ghalib converse. Parvez, Ghalib's disciple arrives there and they engage in an interesting conversation regarding Parvez's 'takhallus' (pen-name. It is decided that Ghalib will get a pen-name for him from Calcutta. Then Yaseen a poet arrives. Yaseen and Ghalib differ about their views on poetry. Yaseen feels Ghalib's poetry is too difficult. After he leaves, there is an attempt between Ghalib and Umrao to resume the bitterness between them but is unsuccessful. Ghalib's lady love Quatiba is waiting for Ghalib and Shireen, her friend, teases her about Ghalib's poetry and her love for him. When Ghalib arrives, Quatiba and Ghalib talk about the Deewan, and loneliness of the journey.

Ghalib's debts increase and a debtor from Chandni Chowk passes a decree forbidding them from leaving the house, or else he would be arrested. Meanwhile, he is informed that Quatiba is unwell. Ghalib cannot accept the restriction of being imprisoned in his house. Shireen comes again and informs him that Quatiba's condition had worsened. Ghalib plans to see her, when Umrao arrives: they have an argument, which leaves Umrao shattered. Kallu comes and informs that Ouatiba had died.
