Dakshayagam Daksha, father-in-law of Lord Shiva, is a haughty being. He refuses to honour Siva as Parameswara, Lord of the World. Daksha holds a yaga, purposely not inviting his sonin-law, Siva. Shiva's wife, Sati, asks her husband, Lord Shiva, for permission to attend her father’s yaga. But Siva refuses as she has not been invited. Nevertheless, Sati decides that she must go. When she is received with anger by her father, who furthermore, insults her husband, Sati immolates herself. Siva punishes Daksha through Virabhadra, a terrible demon who proceeds to cut Daksha's head. Afterwards, Siva relents on the entreaty of the gods, fixing a goat’s head on the revived body of Daksha.
Humbled and repentant, the goat-headed Daksha prostrates himself at the feet of Siva and begs his pardon while praising the Lord.
