The Qudsia Zaidi Centenary Celebrations in Delhi will culminate in a session at the Studio Safdar where Anjolie Ela Menon will converse with MS Sathyu about his journey as a stage designer; journey that began during his association with Begum Zaidi's Hindustani Theatre in the 1950s-60s. Anjolie has also designed number of plays, and has had a lifelong interest in the performing arts. Sathyu designed sets, directed plays and even did bit roles in the plays of the Hindustani Theatre in its short life of ten years. Sathyu has worked as a designer for professional and amateur theatre groups in Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi and other cities, with over 100 plays spanning six decades.
Anjolie Ela Menon has been painting on canvas, paper, walls, furniture and any other surface she can lay her hands on. Today she has evolved a very personal style of evocative art, besides being a feisty advocate of freedom of expression.
MS Sathyu has worked largely in theatre, though he is better known as a film-director, who favours provocative and political themes. His best known work is the partition saga "Garm Hava", which has recently been restored and given a fresh release.
