Event Description : Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan presents "Open Call" Workshop by Barbara Kölling.

Theatre For Very Young Audiences: Using Materials.

Barbara Kölling is a theatre director from Germany who, as well as staging productions for children and young people, develops plays for the youngest theatergoers from the age of one.

Barbara Kölling is one of the artistic directors of HELIOS Theatre, one of the most important free theatre groups in Germany. HELIOS Theatre has a special concept of a "children’s-theatre-house“ for and with the young audiences.

About the workshop :

During the workshop Barbara Kölling will bring the participants in contact with certain materials such as sand, earth, paper and so on. This material will play the most important role in the work.

How to use it? What to show with it? What to tell with it? The workshop participants will improvise with these materials to capture moments. These moments will be used in the second part of the workshop where the participants will work in small groups to create pieces. The end result will consist of several performances, which can then be further developed by those taking part in the workshop.

Barbara Kölling :

A pioneer in children’s theatre, Barbara Kölling explores materials in a simplified way so children can easily engage with the medium. She says: “I worked a lot with puppeteers and so I came in contact with object-theatre. From this point you come directly to the possibilities of the artistic work with material. It´s interesting to follow the possibilities of certain material, to stay behind it and let it "speak". Of course this also has a kind of political view, it means not only "using" material and it means in the artistic work not always putting the human being in the front but also the things/world that is around."
