Event Description : The Pocket Company presents Gender-Ventions, a series of public performances supported by the Goethe-Institut / Max Muller Bhavan, New Delhi. Conceptualised and directed by Niranjani Iyer, the performances revolve around the notions of gender, identity and space and has be performed in various public spaces across Delhi over September and October with the penultimate performances taking place in November 2014.
In the September edition, the team questioned the availability of spaces for women in Delhi. Working with Image and Forum Theatre techniques, they took their interventions into public spaces and street corners across the city: Malkaganj, Janakpuri West, Patparganj, Nehru Place to name a few and met, provoked discussions and interacted with the local residents.
These interventions are performed by a core team of dancers, actors and activists along with the support of a larger group of people from all walks of life who are trained for the project.
Each month the project has focussed on a particular set of ideas related to gender, ranging from security and the body to questioning the status quo of gender norms. The performances consciously move away from an agitative or protest oriented approach towards a more inclusive and discreet form of intervention.
