Event Description : Sangeet Natak Akademi presents Screening of "Dhola Maru" Puppet show by Puran Bhatt
Based on a traditional Rajasthani story, Dhola is a handsome prince betrothed to Maru, the princess of neighbouring kingdom, when they were both
children. But a cruel witch, a jadugarni, wants to be Dhola's wife 50 that she can control the kingdom. With her magic, she changes herself into a young and beautiful girl. She so bewitches Dhola that he forgets his princess and marries the jadugarni instead. Maru, in the meantime, Continues to wait for Dhola. One day a Bhaat comes to her kingdom in order to help her. He journeys to Dhola’s kingdom Where he tells the story of Dhola and Maru with the help of puppets. Dhola realizes that he was the prince figuring in the puppet play, and so, with the help ofthe Bhaat, he travels to meet his young betrothed. The furious jadugami sets many traps for Dhola. Yet, she is unable to prevent true love and loyalty from winning in the end.
Background : Over the past six decades, Sangeet Natak Akademi has built up an archive of audio and video tapes, photographs, slides and films on the performing arts.
