Event Description : "Humboldt and India. Curiosity and its Aesthetic" Travels to distant places are instigated by a strong notion of curiosity, a longing for exploring the unknown, a tinge of adventurism, and its resultant impulse for reconfirmation of one's own aesthetic and cultural values and perceptions. In the aftermath of Alexander von Humboldt's research in the worlds beyond Europe, a number of German explorers and scientists embarked on journeys to hitherto little-known civilisations. Thus, he had inspired a more systematic and focused engagement with India among scholars, who had traveled there like Prince Waldemar of Prussia (1844 to 1846) or the Schlagintweit brothers (1854 to 1857). The illustrated lecture analyses these two journeys in the light of an academic curiosity, and its literary and visual expressions and discusses these in their historical and aesthetic aspects.
Dr. Jutta Jain-Neubauer
Jutta Jain-Neubauer studied Indian Art History at the Universities of Heidelberg (MA) and Bonn (PhD). She has done pioneering work on water architecture in Western India, as well as on Indian miniature painting of the Pahari region, and the travels of German scientists. Her post-doc research was funded through the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation's Fyodor-Lynen scheme.
DWIH Joint Lecture Series 2014/15
Humboldt’s Erben (Humboldt’s Heirs)
Taking up the DWIH’s Motto of “Germany Land of Ideas”, this Joint Lecture Series aims at paying tribute to the different facets of Alexander von Humboldt’s academic achievements. The German House for Science and Innovation (Deutsches Haus für Wissenschaft und Innovation, DWIH) is a consortium of about twenty members for strengthening academic exchange between India and Germany. Heidelberg Center South Asia (HCSA) has initiated this Lecture Series, jointly with the Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH), the Deutsche
Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) and the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD). By doing so, we aim at bringing together scholars from the fields of Natural and Social Sciences, as well as Humanities and Literature. The Lecture Series will be held over the next few months, with prominent scholars from India and Germany.
