About the play :
Ek Salesman ki Maut is a Hindi adaptation of the English Play “Death of a Salesman” written by an American playwright Arthur Miller. The story revolves around the life of Ramdas – a mediocre salesman working for Deewan Chand Mehta & Company. It is about how his failure with his job affects his wife Laxmi and two sons Manoj and Pawan. When Ramdas is finally fired he is unable to take the news and pleads for a second chance but to no avail. His wife is very supportive of him but years of emotional stress begin to show.
The character of Ramdas is conflicting and interesting! He is an egoistic, emotional, self centered and closed-minded individual who ever so often displays a boyish charm. He shows no respect to his wife’s opinions and her thoughts but at the same time expresses fondness towards her. He is disloyal to her, but at the same time wishes to give her as much happiness as he possibly can. He is dedicated to his work, has spent his blood and sweat for the sake of his company he works with. But in the process, over the years, he has failed to acquire any additional skills. With modern technological advances, he is now obsolete in the professional world. His ego prevents him to take up a job under his best friend Harish Khoobchandani and he spends his life in petty jealousy and comparison with others.
Ramdas is unable to comprehend how other people with similar backgrounds have managed to be successful? When he ruins his sons’ celebration of a new venture his elder son Manoj comes back at him revealing some unpleasant happenings of the past and holds him solely responsible for the family’s troubles. The ghost of his successful brother Chaman Lal is increasingly haunting at this point. He feels beckoned by his brother and follows him and this madness proves to be the ultimate cause for his death.
