Event Description : Gati Summer Dance Residency (GSDR) presents All Warmed Up 2014 dance performances.

Each year, this unique dance residency aims to assist and support six emerging South Asian choreographers from different dance backgrounds, traditional and contemporary, in developing their own choreographic works over a period of nine weeks. During this time, each choreographer is provided with financial support, individual mentoring and workshops, rehearsal space and production assistance. The six residents for this year are Rajan Rathore (Delhi), Venuri Perera (Sri Lanka), Avantika Bahl (Mumbai), Mirra Arun (Bangalore), Riya Mandal (Delhi) and Rachnika Goyal (Delhi). The mentors are Padmini Chettur (IND), Sankar Venkateswaran (IND), Kirsty Alexander (UK), Zuleikha Allana (IND), Annie Pui Ling Lok (UK) and Ghostape (CH).The residency culminates in 3 evenings of performances of new works.

GSDR is an initiative of Gati Dance Forum, an organisation that has been working in the field of contemporary dance in India since 2007. Gati Summer Dance Residency 2014 has been supported by Royal Norwegian Embassy, British Council, Goethe-Institut/ Max Mueller Bhavan, Pro Helvetia- Swiss Arts Council, Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation, Ministry of Culture-India and GSDR patrons- Sanjoy Roy, Nilima Sheikh, Anita Ratnam & Vivek Sahni.

About the Residents:
Rachnika Goyal’s piece is broadly about introspection. Seeking peace but finding noise, fighting it, accepting it and experiencing peace.

Riya Mandal is working on a piece that deconstructs body language by looking at components such as gestures, facial expression, full-body posture.

Venuri Perera responds to the political scenario of her native Sri Lanka by exploring the idea of a ‘traitor’. She transposes these explorations onto the body in a series of both abstract and theatrical images.

Rajan Rathore’s piece is a duet. It is an abstract exploration of relationships. Two bodies; male and female, moving in space with the intent of finding oneself through the other. Engaging with each other, being repelled from each other and eventually forging a bond that is nameless.

Mirra‘s exploration focuses on the omnipresent and influential role that the media plays in our daily lives.

Avantika Bahl’s work deals with the idea of home and an exploration of what it means to contain and be
contained, through the use of space outside and within the body
