Synopsis: Koogu is a call, or a paean to invoke the warrior who resides in every being. Koogu is a series of vignettes based on real events, some of which that occurred in the performer's life. A grandmother who considered dancing 'cheap' and not part of 'our culture'; the church choir where boys and girls sang together in praise of God; the failed attempt at running the school marathon, and other life altering incidents in the personal realm are juxtaposed and examined in the light of a larger social and political context. Through these incidents, the performance explores the grey areas that exist within the psyche of every performer wherein the 'character' one is playing begins to merge with the personality of the 'performer'.
Note on the Play: Koogu uses text (primarily in English), dance, sound, song and music in order to provide the audience with fresh ways of sensing a performance. The narrative is non-linear and shifts between personal and general realms in an attempt to reveal that there may actually be no distinction between the two.
Koogu is a blend of styles and forms drawn from the Anish Victor’s training in Devarattam, Silambattam and Tai Chi. The project is the result of a series of conversations between Actor/Director Anish Victor and Michel Casanovas, a dancer and choreographer, who is originally from France but has been working in Bangalore and across India since 2005. The conversations between them essentially examined the word ‘warrior’ and its various meanings and notions. The main question around which the dialogue revolved was – ‘what does one fight for?’ and more importantly - ‘how one ‘fights’?’ It soon became clear that struggles often begin when one’s sense of justice, freedom and equality are threatened. The conversations also led to an examination of the role and impact of the performing artist in today’s world.
