Event Description : Trip to the 'Mela' of Handicrafts and Textiles of India - At Craft Museum.

As people living in India, we have all been exposed to our crafts heritage from our childhood and we have had our own unique experiences and encounters with local crafts of the region and its culture. In our next Baithak we shall have a rendezvous with a subject which is as vast as an ocean, yet makes an fascinating subject to ponder, talk, share ' The Handicrafts and Textiles of India'.

The empires changed over the decades, we moved from the civilization era to the Mauryans, Guptas to the Mughals and Rajputs to the British Era and thereafter but the vicissitudes of history and tides have not robbed the enchanting diversity, rich beauty of our Indian crafts and textiles. Be it the beautiful Phulkari, hand blocked lehngas or famed Madhubanis, the landscape of Indian handicrafts and textiles is spread over its coast lines, valleys, hills, mountains, deserts, forests and even inhospitable terrains. Its not easy to grasp the breadth and depth of Indian crafts with more than 23 million craftsmen engaged in different sector. While this ocean of information on the rich history of Indian crafts is way too vast to be captured, it shall be our endeavor to give you a peek into this rich world of unique offerings of India to the entire globe. And Karavan Musafirs ,did we say, this Baithak, shall be armed with 'PROPS' :)

NOTE: The Baithak shall be led by Kavya Saxena. She has been an intrinsic part of the karavan Armed with an endearing smile and a corporate job in her kitty, she swayed into the world of textiles and crafts since her childhood. She has done extensive projects on textiles of Kutch & Sanganer and is passionate about everything 'hand made'. When she is not wandering around India or herself making something unique, she is found at the National Museum of India, where she gives lectures on Forgotten Textiles and searches new projects to bring across to people. As much as we are joyous to share our enthusiastic speaker, we look forward for your presence for this enriching and memorable experience with us. Infact, we would be glad if you bring your young ones, they will have a lot to learn from our rich cultural heritage of crafts which hold a glorious future for the centuries ahead.
