Film Duration : 36 min

Blood Earth, a project by Word Sound Power (comprised of electronic music composer Chris McGuinness and dancehall vocalist Delhi Sultanate), commenced in August 2011 in the Khonda tribal village of Kucheipadar in South Orissa. In the mid-1990s, large deposits of Bauxite, the mineral from which aluminum is made, were discovered in the area. Soon after, the district became a conflict zone where a vibrant people's movement blossomed with songs serving as a uniting force.

With a mobile music studio, Word Sound Power joined local singers and musicians in Kucheipadar for a new type of collaboration. The result is a cross genre mash up, combining revolutionary songs in Oriya and Kui tribal language with dub poetry by Delhi Sultanate and electronic music composed by Chris McGuinness.

The experimental film, Blood Earth documents the collaborations and explores the relationship between music, struggle, and cultural responses to violence via word and sound. Directed by Film & Television Institute of India (FTII) alumnus Kush Badhwar, Blood Earth was awarded the Adolfas Mekas award at Experimenta 2013, and was shown at the 64th Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale 2014) in the 'Forum Expanded' section, which looks at cinema that explores the relationship with other arts.

Kush Badhwar is a filmmaker interested in shifting definitions of traditional mass-media, collaborating with unorthodox actors and using artistic intervention for improvised and informal political engagement. His collaboration with Delhi Sultanate, Chris McGuinness, farmer, singer and political leader Bhagwan Majhi and others from Kucheipadar, Odisha resulted in Word Sound Power: Blood Earth.

Minati Dash is a technology journalist, communication specialist, blogger and researcher. Minati has done extensive field work in Kucheipadar and is currently writing a PhD on what happens to areas once a movement has been crushed.

Taru Dalmia aka Delhi Sultanate, is an Indian reggae/dancehall artist. His music ranges from hip hop to dubstep, drum & bass and more experimental electronic and acoustic music. With producer Chris McGuinness, Taru is part of Word, Sound Power, dedicated to producing documentary films and musical
collaborations within dancehall and reggae in the Indian subcontinent.

Dr. Das is a bassist, producer and founding member of the group Asian Dub Foundation. In his solo project Dr. Das evolved a unique approach to dub music that is heavier and darker: 'dubnoiz’. Instrumentally and compositionally dubious is minimalistic - using only electric bass, percussion and noise elements to satisfy all the rhythmic, melodic and even harmonic requirements of the music.

Dubnoiz challenges people to listen differently, to regard bass, percussion and noiz as distinct and valid elements of musical thinking. Sounds with or without vocals will convey emotional and political sentiment and metaphor: anger, optimism, joy or militancy. The Blood Earth remix EP is comes fresh on the heels his second solo album “Preparing 4 War” which was released in January 2014.

Directed By : Kush Badhwar
