Event Description : Desires Unlimited presents “Epoch – A Classic Theater Festival”, Delhi’s 1st Vintage Theatre Festival, starting March 8, 2014. The festival will showcase the group’s flagship play – “3, Sakina Manzil” based in a bygone era.

The love story set in pre-independence era when the country was fighting for its independence, world was being ravaged by World War II, and the Hindi film Industry was learning to stand on its feet. Amidst all this, in an old apartment building of Bombay, 3 Sakina Manzil, a love story of two silent lovers (Ms. Shashi and Comrade Shashi) unfolds. Torn apart by destiny, they tread different paths only to meet again after five decades.

The story is set in the backdrop of Bombay Dock Explosion (that happened on April 14, 1944). Author Ramu Ramanathan was moved on hearing the accounts of survivor. In a note to Desires Unlimited, he said, “Sometimes in the middle of the night. I stood in front of a building which burnt on 14 April 1944. I tried to relive those moments. It taught me empathy.” When the play was first staged in India it had a mesmerizing effect on the audience as is articulated by Ramu Ramanthan in the note, “…When the play was staged in India by Working Title, I heard of audiences in Mumbai who saw the play and then went off in search of 3 Sakina Manzil.”

The play is written by Ramu Ramanathan and directed by Deepak Dhimaja.

The production team is co-lead by Pankaj Nanda and Abhey Kumar.

Cast : The role of Ms. Shashi – a young affluent Kutchi girl – is performed by Puneet Sikka while Comrade Shashi is played by Tarun Singhal. Tarun is also the founder of Desires Unlimited Drama Society.

Desires Unlimited, established in 2006, is a full-fledged production house for digital audio visual content. It was co-founded by a group of engineers cum artists from IIT Delhi. Though IITians are known for their Silicon Valley startups, these youngsters opted for a different playground all together relying on Mr. Frost’s famous lines, “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I, I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.”

The group has created corporate films for brands such as Britania, Samsung, and Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC). It has staged 11 plays and over 40 shows across Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore. The group performs ‘desi’ Broadway shows that are characterized by grandeur and centered on entertaining audiences.
