Event Description : Jana Natya Manch and CITU present 'Halla Bol : A festival of worker-performers' Remembering Safdar Hashmi
Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) present a unique festival of worker-performers. Theatre director Habib Tanvir used to say that those who are economically the poorest in our country are culturally the richest. Safdar believed in the power of the working people and the power of art to transform the world. This festival, which is a tribute to Safdar Hashmi, brings to the stage the many colours of people’s creativity and talents and also re-affirms the integration of art and labour. The festival is named Halla Bol, after the play during which Janam and Safdar were attacked in January 1989.
Halla Bol will take place in Jhandapur, the site of Safdar’s killing. For the last 25 years, Janam and CITU have organized the annual performance on 1strange of other events, programmes and workshops have also been organized here over the years. The venue is named after Pete Seeger, the legendary American singer-activist, inspiration for singers like Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen, who died recently at the age of 94.
Halla Bol features a number of popular and highly skilled performers. What binds them all together is that they are all working people. The forms that will be performed include: Alha, Dhola, Ragini, Nautanki, Saphera-Pharva, Qawwali, Birha, etc. Some of the highlights include: a marriage band which will play progressive songs, including Dylan’s Blowin in the Wind, Robeson’s Old Man River, and Faiz’s Darbar-e-watan; a performance of street acrobatics; a performance of street magic; and a French brass band, Imperiel Kikiristan. The full programme is appended below.
UNIQUE: Not only is Halla Bol the first festival of its kind in Delhi (and perhaps India!), what makes it special is that it has been curated by trade unionists from CITU – a festival of worker-performers, curated by workers! Janam’s role has been mainly to provide logistical and planning support. COMMEMORATING: Halla Bol is the high point of a series of events to mark the 25thkilling of Safdar Hashmi. It will be recalled that Janam was attacked on 1 January 1989 when performing a play in support of workers’ demands. A Nepali migrant worker, Ram Bahadur, was also killed in this attack. Safdar Hashmi’s name is today synonymous with street theatre, with the solidarity of artists with workers, and with cultural protest. anniversary of Safdar Hashmi’s killing, Jana Natya Manch (Janam) and the January to mark Safdar’s martyrdom.
