Event Description : Anyone who's ever taken anything stronger than an aspirin owes something to Henrietta Lacks
In 1951, an African American woman walked into the coloured section of the John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, USA with a pain in her abdomen. A biopsy revealed a cancer that would kill her a few months later. During her stay at the hospital, a cell sample - taken without her permission - was used as the raw material for some of the most important scientific discoveries of the past 100 years.
An award winning British play straight from the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, HeLa is an all-consuming story, intertwining genetic identity, social responsibility and current ethical debates about human tissue research and ownership. This one-woman show brings the story of Henrietta Lacks back to life, using testimony from her family members, the scientific community and the doctors that treated her.
The India tour is presented by QTP in association with British Council.
HeLa – a play by Adura Onashile, directed by Graham Eatough and produced by Iron-Oxide.
The fusion of video, music, monologue, and physicality makes Hela a feast for the senses.
The People's Review
A provocative, chilling piece which cuts to the bone
