Event Description : Jhandapur Industrial Heritage Walk.

Safdar Hashmi was killed on the outskirts of Delhi in 1989. On the 25th anniversary of the attack and Safdar's martyrdom, Janam, in association with Itihaas, is offering a industrial heritage walk in Jhandapur – a walk that will trace the history of a quarter century (and more) of urbanisation, industrialisation, unionisation, de-industrialisation, working class militancy and the role of art in all this.

Smita Vats, of Itihaas, has designed the walk and will conduct it. This is an absolutely unique opportunity to pay tribute to a people's hero by learning about our environment from a perspective one rarely gets!

The walk will include a local tempo ride – with stops at Hero Cycle, Central Electronics Limited, Safdar Hashmi Smarak Sthal. Walking through the small galis of Jhandapur settlement and joining the locals at Dr Ambedkar Park to remember Safdar, the solidarity of the workers and the artists and the power of art and theatre. In the basti itself, there will be plenty of options to pick up delicious -- if slightly fattening! -- snacks and beverages.

PERFORMANCES BY LOCAL KIDS - STREET PLAYS - SINGING
PUBLIC MEETING addressed by Sitaram Yechury
Pick up from Kaushambi Metro Station (Blue line) at 11.30am

SPECIAL ATTRACTION ONE: Janam's latest play. The story of a mass murderer who, backed by corporate fat cats and media running dogs, aspires to become the ruler of a country. The country in question is obviously not India, and the time, equally obviously, not the present.
SPECIAL ATTRACTION TWO: The Jhandapur Industrial Heritage Walk, conducted by Smita Vats of Itihaas. Scroll down for details.
