Event Description : When the Gods Meet - Unique confluence of Indic-Greek Mythology.
Myths and legends are integral part of any civilization. They depict and symbolise the legacy of values and traditions of those cultures. Two ancient civilizations with similarities in their mythologies are the Indian and Greek. As an erudite cultural researcher, Dr. Sonal Mansingh has strung together selected episodes from the two cultures. This production establishes commonalities between two civilizations and unravels the deeper philosophy behind mythologies around the same time though far apart geographically.
Producer-Director’s Note
Gods speak to us in many ways and many languages. If our antennas are tuned and minds open we catch those messages in sharp clarity. In over 54 years of active professional dancing career and teaching I have benefitted immensely from an attitude of keen humility and eagerness to receive. Therefore when ideas drop in my lap like ripe fruit I pick up one, taste it and share it. Greece and India have intrinsic cultural links going back to at least two millennia and more. Silk routes from India perhaps did not touch Greece but Alexander touched Indian sub-continent in more than military way. Indo-Hellenic influences imbued art and culture in India in many ways. Even the Indian Sari is an echo of Hellenic toga (unstitched long cloth)! I was fascinated by Greek mythology as well which held parallels to our own myths suffused by Gods, Goddesses, Titans, demons, Goblins and humans. Interaction between them carried deeper into collective civilisational psychology and mores.
I selected popular myths from them to create a tapestry of the nine emotions, the NAVARASA through Krshna and Shiva, Vishnu as Mohini and from the Greek myths I got Psyche and Eros, Zeus and Europa, Uranus and Gaiia.
While it has been great experience to invite the Gods to visit they demand my total attention and detailing of every turn and twist in their stories!
My special thanks to the entire Team involved in this unique production. My grateful thanks to Shri Sudarshan Agarwal who guided my efforts to raise funds and meet sudden and difficult situations. Shri K.N Memani, Shri Ajit Sud, Shri Sundeep Bhutoria, Shri H.S Das, Shri Shri Dev Sharma, Shri D.P Tripathi have been pillars of support. Smt. Rohini Ahluwalia and Smt. Nayana Goradia have extended help each time.
May the Divine hosts bless us all.
