As chronicled in various epochs of Delhi’s history, Dhillika is the oldest inhabited area of Delhi, which is still in its full glory (now forms a part of Mehrauli village). Having first been formrs. Consequently it has seen the rise and the fall of the various dynasties & the empires of Delhi. This land was blessed by many temples and later by the arrival of sufi saints.
Delhi Karavan will take you on a tryst with the regality, the mysticism and the grandeur of the first city of Delhi. We will tell you why and how Mehrauli has been able to sustain itself for over more than 2000 years, despite many empires having relinquished it time and again. We take you back in time, fathoming and unravelling multiple layers of history that have been coexisting peacefully and timelessly amongst these many monuments.
Lal Kot: XVIth Tomar King of Delhi, Raja Anangpal (II) aka Anekpal aka Anaypal fortified his village in mid-11th century. His fort was called Lal Kot, which marked the first city of Delhi (after Indraprastha of Pandavas). Later his great grandson gave the throne of Delhi to Rai Pithora (aka Prithviraj Chauhan), the king of Ajmer, who extended this fort by three times its existing dimensions.
Sanjay Van, a sprawling medicinal forest in South Delhi, rumoured to be amongst the most haunted spots of Delhi, is also one of the densest greens of the city, housing remains of Lal Kot and lying adjacent to innumerable graves of Sufi saints.
The famous heritage lover, Vikramjit Singh Rooprai (of Delhi Heritage Photography Club) will lead the Karavan.
