Event Description : "RIVER" Print Imprint, a solo art exhibition by Yusuf.
River Print Imprint is Yusuf’s recent series, a collection of fifteen pieces. Cloth, Fiber glass, silk screen prints on the surface of acrylic sheet are basic elements used by the artist in this series. Abstractions come in a brand new avatar in Yusuf’s show. The line has become the artist’s melody and his song and he develops his canvasses around it. He flirts with the line and lets his imagination go wild. The use of colors in these canvasses is minimal – black, white and mustard. The lines are in every imaginable form – linear, horizontal, squares or rectangles. The artist’s sense of freedom comes out alive in his canvasses. Humble, pure, and almost surreal, the paintings express the black and white world of Yusuf’s freedom.

He flirts with the line and lets his imagination go wild. The use of colours in these canvasses is minimal – black, white and mustard. The lines are in every imaginable form – linear, horizontal, squares or rectangles. Yusuf’s world of abstractions has come after years of experimenting with different modes, even figurative art. Talking about the line, his muse, Yusuf says, “The line is the most abstract element – it has no end or beginning. And basic elements don’t change. It is how one chooses to use it that then becomes paramount,” contends Yusuf. And yet unlike the more popular usage of the line, his idea is to keep the flow of thought lyrical and open ended. “Line is a form that is used to limit and encircle images. I use it in a manner where is allowed to open possibilities and not close them!” he laughs. It is this conviction in the non-rigid approach – geographical or even political – that ensures that the artist expresses himself in unconventional formats.
The artist’s sense of freedom comes out alive in his canvasses. Humble, pure, and almost surreal, the paintings express the black and white world of Yusuf’s freedom. For him, the line is a living unit, full of limitless possibilities. He believes that when an artist creates a shape using the line, then it is the line that gives it a definite shape, then ending all other possibilities. That is why in his line drawings, one does not see shapes of any natural things – his group of lines is full of possibilities capable of being taken anywhere.
Talking about his fascination with the abstracts, the artist says, “My upbringing has been such that abstraction was a given. I remember the first time that I went to a mosque as a child with my mother – when I entered, there was nothing inside. That then became a part of my memory bank that I related to. After all, abstraction is like nirgun bhakti. The definition of God is limitless just like a line. There were times when I used to restrain myself. But after I read the scriptures, then I felt that there was no need to hold back but just run at full speed.”
