All these pertinent issues will be discussed by leading experts in the field. Our delegates will also talk about issues like prevention of type 2 diabetes in India that is emerging as a major threat, on the metabolic benefits of bariatric surgery in the obese and managing hypertension in type 2 diabetes,” says Dr Rajeev Chawla, Organizing Secretary, RSSDI and Director, North Delhi Diabetes Centre.

Among the speakers will be Sir Michael Hirst, the President of the International Diabetes Federation; Dr V Mohan, President of RSSDI; Dr S V Madhu, Organizing Chairman, RSSDI; Dr. B M Makkar, Honorary Treasurer, RSSDI-2013 and Dr Chawla himself, among many other leading names.

“Diabetes is a major issue of concern in India with more than 63 million diabetic patients and 77 millions prediabetics, one third of whom may get converted to diabetes if preventive strategies are not implemented. To address this threat, it is crucial to promote more research in the country and analyze our findings in the local context, rather than depending on western studies. Our annual conference is a major step in that direction,” said Dr Madhu, Organizing Chairman, RSSDI and Head, Department of Endocrinology & Medicine, University College of Medical Sciences and GTB Hospital, Delhi.
The Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India (RSSDI) is India’s premiere organization in diabetes research whose objective is to promote indigenous research in the country that will enable the medical fraternity devise solutions more indigenous to the country.
The third day of the event will start with an early morning Walkathon in which as many as 5000 school children are expected to participate. The RSSDI Diabetes Walk is aimed at spreading awareness about the ailment and the importance of physical fitness.
“While we all know that we are sitting on a diabetes time bomb, there are several issues that are not much talked about. For example, the fact that lakhs of women acquire diabetes during pregnancy, that urbanization is a factor in the growing incidence of diabetes and that there are a series of myths still associated with diabetes in India. It is high time we start talking about preventive course of action when it comes to diabetes in India,” says Dr B M Makkar, Honorary Treasurer, RSSDI-2013 and Director, Diabetes & Obesity Centre.
