Event Description : Shri Ram Centre Repertory presents 'Democracy in Heaven' Hindi Political Satirical Play. based on Shankar Puntambekar's novel 'Ek Mantri Swarglok Main'.

Democracy in Heaven is a satire on politics which depicts the belief systems and the negative practices of the so-called politicians who try to keep hold on our democratic system with their flattering tricks. They pose to be true icons of democracy, but that is only in words. They overrule the true objectives of democracy. Seeing from a neutral perspective, the gimmicks of these politicians is a black farce of our times full of humour and comedy.
After a successful political campaign, Minister Alee is returning to his capital but gets killed in a car accident with his personal secretary Miss Kali (the bud) and assistant Mr Bali. After death, their souls are taken to the other world by the minions of Yamraj (the god of death) for facing judgement before Chitragupta, whose office has kept the life track records of all the deeds of their mortal life. It is believed that they will get place only in hell, but Minister Alee, with the help of sensuous Miss Kali, succeeds in getting permits of Heaven from Chitragupta and enters heaven. When Indra, the Lord of Heaven allots them their duties, MinisterAlee refuses to accept, and conspires a revolt against Indra’s age old monarchy.
He challenges Lord Indra and provokes him to announce elections to bring about democracy, as this was the most contemporary system successfully prevailing in the world’s largest democracy: India. At last Indra announces election. The Minister being a champion of democratic practices conducts a campaign against Indra. It brings a new wave of hope and excitement in heaven.
But after all the flattering efforts of Minister Alee and his allies, Indra wins the election and invites Mr Alee to join his party. Minister Alee refuses saying that heaven was not a suitable place for his kind of politics, so if Indra wants to offer him something, he must be sent back to India for rebirth as a politician. Indra consults Brahma and conveys that with reference to the Vishnu Avatar Rule, he will be granted a rebirth only if a mortal mother wishes to give birth to the kind of politician that he was. Till then he would be thrown in the Aakash Ganga (Milky Way galaxy) to move around the earth!
