Speakers : Hasan Imam, of Prerna, Patna (Bihar) and Badal Saroj, vice-president, CITU, MP.

Chairperson : well known writer and Marxist thinker Kantimohan

Background : On 1st January 989, Janam was attacked by goons backed by the ruling political interests, when we were performing our play Halla Bol for the Central Indian Trade Union (CITU) in Jhandapur, Sahibabad. Safdar Hashmi and Ram Bahadur, a migrant Nepali worker, were killed in this attack.

Since 1989, on every 1st January, we go back to Jhandapur, to the same spot, and perform to reaffirm our commitment to people's theatre and the unity of the working people and artists. Thousands of well wishers and comrades have joined us, including many artist friends who have performed at Jhandapur over the years.

On the 25th year of his martyrdom, we will celebrate Safdar's red-hot, luminous life with a series of events in and around Jhandapur.
