Event Description : ALL WARMED UP: New propositions in dance at Gati Summer Dance Residency 2013

After nine weeks of sweating it out at the rehearsal studio and an intensive process of working the mind and body, the six residents at Gati Summer Dance Residency 2013 are finally set to present their choreographic creations.

Showcase 1: 18th October, 2013
Showcase 2: 19th October, 2013

Gati Summer Dance Residency (GSDR) is a programme specially aimed towards dance creation or choreography in India- which remains a key area to be addressed in professional dance. Being one of the only spaces in India that supports dance artists to discover their choreographic voices, this residency aims to assist and support six emerging choreographers from different dance backgrounds, traditional and contemporary, by giving them an opportunity to propose, conceptualise and develop their own choreographic worksover a period of nine weeks. During this time, each choreographer is provided with financial support, individual mentoring and workshops, rehearsal space and production assistance. The six residents for this year are Rahul Goswami (Delhi), Nikita Patel (Pune), Asha Ponikiewska (Delhi), Namrata Pamnani (Delhi), Bhumika Arora (Navi Mumbai) and Nimit Gandhi (Delhi).

A unique feature of GSDR is that it is a mentored residency so that residents explore the choreographic process with guidance and feedback from experienced, senior artists. The role of the mentors is conceived of as a supportive outside eye. Every resident meets each of the Core Mentors several times over the 9 weeks, who helps raise questions, throw up ideas and clarify intentions and choices during the residents’ process. These meetings are incredibly creative and often serve to bring entirely new perspectives for the residents to their work. The mentors for GSDR 2013 were Sankar Venkateswaran (IND), Maya Krishna Rao (IND), Abhijeet Tambe (IND) and Antonio Bühler (SWI).

GSDR is an initiative of Gati Dance Forum, an organisation that has been working in the field of contemporary dance in India since 2007. Gati Summer Dance Residency 2013 has been supported by Goethe-Institut/ Max Mueller Bhavan, Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation, Royal Norwegian Embassy, Pro Helvetia - Swiss Arts Council, British Council, The Japan Foundation, Bharat Forge and Zorba the Buddha and Dr. Anita Ratnam and Vivek Sahni as part of the GSDR comrade programme.
