Event Description : United Art Fair 2013.
While continuing with our radically new model of an artist-driven fair (as opposed to a gallery-driven fair, as most in the world are), in its second edition the United Art Fair will continue to expand on the parameters of contemporary art by looking at a wider variety of disciplines, practitioners, media and materials. Paintings, sculpture and photography will continue to be the majority of works on display, but the fair will also include examples from all fields of design (including graphic art, fashion, textiles, furniture, and ceramics) to expand on how we define "art" today. By also accommodating works from the genres of folk and tribal art, crafts and ritualarts, the fair will expand on how we define "contemporary" in India today. Boundaries between these various genres and disciplines will be breached, with exciting combinations of materials on display to challenge our preconceived categories of artistic production.
Commercial art fairs, as we know them, have proliferated across the world in the last ten years. It has also had its positive impact in India but despite this progress in the contemporary art scene in India there were areas that were getting stagnated. The market parameters were unable to support further expansion and the current system was not being able to accommodate the wide diversity of talent in the country. Also the Gallery system in India though making constant efforts to work towards the expansion of the contemporary art scene in India owing to their own limitations are finding it difficult to support the vast talent pool in the country
This is where United art fair model enters as a progressive forum and not as a competition or
challenge to the existing infrastructure of commercial galleries or other art fairs in India, but rather an adjunct platform for undiscovered or over-looked artists who have not been able to enter the rather circumscribed gallery system.
The United Art Fair had its premiere in September 2012. It radically ventured away from the normal art fair model, choosing instead to showcase works of art which could be sourced from artists directly, without the intermediary of a gallery or a dealer, but could be available for sale to the public visiting the fair. Each artist would contribute to the fair by giving work of art to the organizers for their participation, while the organizers themselves would be responsible for selling the multiple works on display by each artist directly to the collectors and paying the artistsfor their works which had been sold. The scale of the fair and diversity of works on view matched that which can be seen in any large art fair anywhere in the world, while the exhibition display was characterized by a certain democratic chaos. both artists and the general public responded enthusiastically to the fair.
