The project marks the birth centenary of Amrita Sher-Gil (1913-1941) and grew out of dialogues between the director and choreographer. Biswas and Chatterjee both resonate with the artist’s life and work – just as Sher-Gil traveled to various continents and absorbed cultural influences that impacted her ideas and work, they too straddle Europe and India in idiosyncratic ways, assuming the role of translators.
Unfinished unfolds into abstracted movement sequences, fragments of text and images exploring different facets of a nomadic aesthetic, focusing on changing motifs in transit between Europe and India. Drawing on associations with Sher-Gil's images and the resonances they have in the present-day lives of the director and choreographer, the project explores the tensions, distances, displacements and overlaps of a nomadic aesthetic that feminist theorist Rosi Braidotti describes as in transit and neither here nor there.
Aditee Biswas has associated with and designed for many eminent theatre directors from India and abroad; Biswas creates interdisciplinary, intercultural, dance/movement based work, largely dealing with the themes of gender, identity and politics of the body.
Sandra Chatterjee cultivates an aesthetic that reflects the nomadic qualities of her life. Munich-born Chatterjee's choreography is based on her training in Kuchipudi, but also draws on Bharatanatyam, Polynesian, modern/postmodern/contemporary European dance techniques, and yoga. She is a co-founder of the Post Natyam Collective (www.postnatyam.net), a transnational network of independent choreographers/scholars.
