Event Description : 'Notes on Chai'  is a collection of snippets of everyday conversations inter woven with abstract sound explorations that attempt to relocate our relationship with the quotidian. Both in terms of performance styles and content, the piece inhabits two clearly defined spaces - of everyday conversations and sound segments that use the voice as an instrument.
The piece attempts to capture and create, through a series of portrayals, a collective sense of the every day, which resonates with a universal sense of the ordinary across cultures and hopefully across different socio economic strata.

The abstract sound explorations in the piece are inspired from Tibetan chanting techniques, western overtone singing and extended vocal techniques. These sound techniques create different sonic textures that act as spring boards -stretching, altering and at times disrupting the spaces and sense of time created by the conversational bits, creating a series of images and conversations simultaneously in the everyday world and at the edge of it, encouraging the spectator to attempt to relocate his / her relationship with the quotidian.

Jyoti Dogra is a theatre artist based in Mumbai. In the past few years her theatre practice has moved increasingly towards making devised pieces which are not narrative driven, but use the self as a starting point. She has been devising, directing and performing original works that are strongly invested in the body, exploring physical and vocal (sound) imagery, with only minimal design support.
