Event Description : DWIH Joint Lecture Series 2013. Humboldts Erben (Humboldt's Heirs)
Lecture
Taking up the DWIH’s Motto of “Germany Land of Ideas”, this Joint Lecture Series aims at paying tribute to the different facets of Alexander von Humboldt’s academic achievements. The German House for Science and Innovation (Deutsches Haus für Wissenschaft und Innovation, DWIH) is a consortium of about twenty members for strengthening academic exchange between Indian and Germany. Heidelberg Center South Asia (HCSA) has initiated this Lecture Series, jointly with the Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH), the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) and the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD). By doing so, we aim at bringing together scholars from the fields of Natural and Social Sciences, as well as Humanities and Literature. The Lecture Series will be held over the next few months, with prominent scholars from India and Germany.
Alexander von Humboldt. Rethinking Accelerated Globalisation
In his numerous writings, Alexander von Humboldt (1769 - 1859) has developed the first European theory of globalisation. In fact, over more than seven decades, this tireless traveler, philosopher, naturalist and writer has formulated a complex and ground-breaking response to the second period of accelerated globalisation, far beyond his new discourse on the New World that has inspired the political leaders of the Independencia movement in the former Spanish colonies. His Travel Diaries as well as his American travelogue, his "Views of the Cordilleras" as well as his "Examen critique" allow us to rethink the global landscapes of his time and of our time. Is the author of "Cosmos" the author of new cosmopolitics?
Prof. Ottmar Ette is holding the Chair of Romance Literature (Romanistik) at the University of Potsdam, Germany from 1995 onwards. After completing his Ph.D. from Freiburg University (Germany) he obtained a post-doc degree (Habilitation) from the University of Eichstätt (Germany). Later on, he has been instrumental in setting up several high level research groups funded by the DFG. He is a member of the Academia Europaea (Academy of Europe) as well as a Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Palmes Académiques.
