Event Description : SONCHIRYA presents 'Saawan' Soulful performance by ‘Queen of Folk’ Malini Awasthi. 
Malini Awasthi is the face of folk music in India. When you think of traditional folk music; you think of Malini Awasthi. Not surprisingly she is credited in bringing back these traditional forms of music to the national stage. 
Indian folk music has been revived in a big way due to her contribution to this form of music. Malini is highly acclaimed for her “gaayiki” and her powerful performances. The world has seen her versatility in the famous music reality show “JUNOON” telecast on the channel NDTV Imagine. Singing the various forms of folk music from Benaras and Awadh like the Dadra, Sohar, Banna, Jhoola, Kajri, Holi, Chaiti, Vivaah, Dhobiya, Nirgun, etc. she showcased these different forms of folk music in her own way. Some of these forms, which are almost dying forms when sung on the stage, mesmerized the viewers and took the nation by a storm. A disciple of the Thumri proponent Padma Vibhushan Girija Devi Ji, today Malini is one of the leading Thumri singers of the Benaras Gharana. Malini is recognized for her distinctive style of singing which is a beautiful combination of soulful renditions of melodies together with her powerful performances. Equally accomplished in Ghazal and Sufi gaayki, Malini reminds you of the old world charm of the beautiful Lucknow and the Ganga-Jamuni culture of Uttar Pradesh.
A versatile singer, Malini is a regular performer for the famous “JAHAN-EKHUSRO” organized by renowned film maker and artist Muzaffer Ali. Her Sufi music albums on ROOMI and HAZRAT AMIR KHUSRO have been widely appreciated. Times Music has recently released a music album PURVAIYA with Malini which was launched by Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasia in Mumbai in the year 2009.Malini has sung for the famous band MEDIEVAL PANDITZ in their album HELLO-HELLO and her fusion song TONIC has been a world wide hit. Recently, when Bharat Ratna, LATA MANGESHKAR ji was asked about the promising talents in music on her 80th birthday, she named Malini, as one of her favorite singers(report Hindustan Times 29th September 2009). Coming from the living legend her self, Malini considers these golden words as one of her biggest milestones.
A post graduate in hindustani classical music from BHATKHANDE UNIVERSITY Lucknow, she has performed extensively through out the country showing her versatility to her fans and spreading the rich heritage of Indian folk music. An ICCR approved artist, she has toured various countries, including the USA, UK, Holland and Mauritius. She also has a rare honour to be invited to Pakistan to render her style of Thumri, Dadra and Ghazals.
