We are continuously promoting the Heritage music of films and to celebrate the spirit of glorious 80 years of playback singing in films, a programme titled as “Nostalgia…Awaz De Kahan Hai (Golden Melodies from films) rendered by yesteryear artistes Shamshad Begum, Noorjahan, Suraiya, Getta Dutt, Kishore Kumar, Lata.
In year 1931 when the first talkie “Alam Aara” was produced signifying the end of silent cinema. In the first decade female singers ruled and there were very few songs by male artistes. Actors were lending their voice and playback singing till the end of 30’s was not technically feasible. Prominent female singers of that era were Kannan Devi, Shanta Apte, Devika Rani, Rajkumari, Zohra Bai, Shamshad Begum, Khursheed, Suraiya, Noorjahan and by the end of 40’s Geeta Dutt and Lata. The domination of male singers started with arrival of K.L.Saigal in 40’s and Talat Mahmood in 50’s. Mohd Rafi, Mukesh, Manna
Dey were senior and popular till they lived. Though Kishore Kumar started his career in 1947 he was overshadowed by other male artistes. Kishore Kumar came to limelight after 60’s and became the leading singer of 70’s.
SMW takes pride in showcasing Shamshad Begum, Noorjahan, Geeta Dutt, Suraiya, Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar and also paying tribute to first Nightingale of film music “Shamshad Begum”.
