Shades of Identity
This year’s Open Air Film Night at Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan screens four movies from Germany on the topic of integration and identity.

Schedule:
5.30 pm
KNALLHART – TOUGH ENOUGH (2006)
Director: Detlev Buck
Duration: 98 min.
Miriam and her 15-year-old son Michael have to move from posh Zehlendorf to run-down Berlin-Neukölln. The boy finds friends in his new neighborhood, but at school he is victimized and pressed for money by Errol and his gang. Handing over money from a burglary rather serves to encourage the bullies instead of warding them off, so Michael is desperately looking for a better solution.

7.15 pm
KEBAB CONNECTION (2005)
Director: Anno Saul
Duration: 96 min.
This German comedic hit is about love, parenthood, martial arts, family and really big stuffed pitas. Hamburg-born Ibrahim “Ibo” Secmez aspires to make the first German kung-fu movie. Though stymied by actual plot details, he’s already got a killer title: Lethal Fist Of The Yellow Avenger. Ibo’s plans are derailed, however, by his lovely and mature German girlfriend Titzi.

9.00 pm
LICHTER (2003)
Director: Hans-Christian Schmid
Duration: 105 min.
The story of two cities on the river Oder, Frankfurt on the German side and Slubice on the Polish side. The former conflict between east and west has continued on an economic level since the end of the Cold War. It is a film about people determined to reach the Federal Republic of Germany, and about people who discover that Germany is anything but paradise, as well as about legal and illegal transactions and a defunct east-west love story.

10.45
ALMANYA (2011)
Director: Yasemin Şamdereli
Duration: 101 min.
A charming cross-cultural comedy about three generations of German-Turks, “Almanya” is the story of a Turkish family living in Germany who set off together for their homeland. Moving across the past and present, the journey is full of memories, arguments and reconciliations, until the family trip takes an unexpected turn…
