A Festival of Dance featuring a classic, recent and new choreography of songs from Jayadeva’s Geetagovinda in various Indian Classical Dance forms.
The first edition of Ashtapadi held on the sidelines of the Commonwealth Games on the 12th and 13th of October, 2010 at the Kamani Auditorium, New Delhi was a component of Delhi Celebrates of the Delhi Government. The Second Edition was organized on the 3rd and 4th of October 2011 at Kamani Auditorium, New Delhi. In these editions Ashtapadi presented all the twenty-four songs of Geetagovinda, the twelfth century classic of Jayadeva entirely consisting of new
choreography in Odissi based on the music of Sampoorna Geetagovinda, a recent music composition of the unabridged version of the classic by Dr Subas Pani, noted cultural organizer with research interests in Jagannatha and Jayadeva. With these two editions, the Ashtapadi Festival has made a mark as a quality event in the cultural calendar of Delhi. It has received critical acclaim and wide support from connoisseurs, rasikas, foreigners and discerning audience.
In this is 3rd edition of this unique festival the Geetagovinda Pratisthana (www.geetagovinda.org) is presenting thirteen of the songs of the Geetagovinda in major Indian Classical Dance forms – Bharatanatyam, Odissi, Kuchipudi and Mohiniyattam. The festival will feature some classic choreography by all time greats like Kelu Charan Mahapatra, Vempatti Chinna Satyam as well as some recent and new choreography. Senior dancers Madhavi Mudgal (Odissi), Deepti Omchery Bhalla (Mohiniyattam) and young maestros Sathyanarayana Raju(Bharatnatyam) and Srimayi Vempati (Kuchipudi) will perform in the Festival. Dr Subas Pani has curated the festival as its creative director. The Festival has a dedicated website at www.ashtapadi.in.
