"München in INDIEN (Munich in India)" documentary film screening at Max Mueller Bhavan / Gothe Institut, 3 Kasturba Gandhi Marg > 7pm on 3rd December 2012
Time : 7:00 pm
Duration : 90 mins
Event Description : 'München in INDIEN (Munich in India)' documentary film screening.
The film MUNICH IN INDIA tells the story of the adventurous life and work of the portrait painter Fritz-Munich. Born in 1896 in Germany’s southwestern region of Palatine as Johannes Adam Fritz, the young man initially completes a bank apprenticeship. In 1925, Fritz-Munich gives up his secure and bourgeois lifestyle, leaves Heidelberg and begins with his studies at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts and signs his paintings from now on with „Fritz- München“.
After his studies, from 1928 on, he travels through Europe, Northern Africa and South America to paint and to get inspiration. Back in Munich, the artist falls in love with the dancer Editha Wölfl and promises that they would take a honeymoon to the Indian subcontinent. In January 1932, only a few days after their marriage, the young couple embarks from Marseille towards Bombay.
During the passage to India Fritz-Munich paints the Maharaja of Baroda, who gives him a letter of recommendation – this is the door opener for the artist to the palaces of the Indian rulers. Fritz-Munich becomes the sought-after court painter of the Maharajas and the British colonial nobility.
Five further creative journeys to India follow between 1933 and 1937, all of which Fritz-Munich documents in diaries and letters, but most notably with his 16mm film camera.
