Event Details : The Japan Foundation, New Delhi and the Opera Theater Konnyakuza, Tokyo proudly present the opera “Pinocchio”, starting from 4th – 13th October in 4 cities of India.
In commemoration of the 60th Anniversary of Japan-India Diplomatic Relations, we bring
Japan’s charm to India through this performance, with the intention of further enhancing
the friendly ties between the two countries.
About Konnyakuza
The Opera Theater Konnyakuza was founded in Tokyo in 1971, with an aim of creating
and promoting new operas sung in Japanese by former members of student club called
Konnyaku Exercise Club in Tokyo Arts University. It is celebrating its 41st anniversary this
year.
Since opera was first introduced to Japan,Japanese opera training has concentrated on bringing up opera singers on a par with professional singers in Europe in their skills testable on European stages. Konnyakuza has been presenting innovative ideas in the direction with physical expression based on the training of "Konnyaku Exercise" in order to establish the honor of opera singers.
It has conducted various performances in Japan and abroad. Currently, Konnyakuza carries on approximately 250 performances a year with Kyoko Hagi as the music director and 37 performers (singers). Since 1999 itself, The Opera Theater Konnyakuza has performed in 13 countries in overseas and more than 13,000 people outside Japan have enjoyed their performance. In India, Konnyakuza has earlier performed in the year 2001.
Their opera is called as the “opera sung in Japanese”, hence the show is conducted in Japanese language. It aims at conveying and sharing the joy of opera with people all over the world, by introducing this unique show from Japan.
About Opera “Pinocchio”
All the children of the world have been familiar with the story of Pinocchio.
Konnyakuza perform “Opera Pinocchio” which describes children's childlike feeling, with
making good use of performer’s physical expression and percussions. “Opera Pinocchio” is performed only 4 opera singers and 1 pianist. An audience also feels a time axis and a world view; enjoy the charms of many characters of the story with performers. In addition, an excellent script and a humorous stage direction are also a vital factor to this work.
The opera “Pinocchio” has been loved by boys and girls, men and women of all ages, and
is a signature repertory of the Theater. The original writer is Carlo Collodi (1826-1890,
Florence, Italy) and Acting Script is done by Kiyokazu YAMAMOTO.
experimental project based on verbal expression and has received reputation of her great dance movement. Presently, she composes the choreography of various genres.
